Place of Interest (Tourist Attractions)

Shanghai is a fascinating mix of East and West. It has historic shikumen houses that blended the styles of Chinese houses with European design flair, and it has one of the richest collections of art deco buildings in the world. Because there were so many Concessions to Western powers during the turn of the 20th century, at times the city has the feel of Paris or Montreal, while Tudor style buildings give a German flair, and the 1930s buildings put you in New York or Chicago. Shanghai is truly an international city and has plenty to see and do, make sure when visiting the city to check out these areas first.

The Bund with it's row of Western institutional banks and business buildings, was once the most important financial street in Asia. The Bund houses more upscale restaurants and Hotels now than businesses, which makes it a great place to visit. This historic river front street stands in shocking contrast to the ultra modern skyline just across the river.

While in Pudong be sure to visit the Shanghai Aquarium and OrientalPearlTower where you'll get a breathtaking view of Shanghai from one of the tallest vantage points in the city.

Just outside the gardens is the zigzag Bridge of Nine Turnings, one of the most well-known sights in Shanghai, crosses an artificial lake to Huxingtang, a beautiful little pavilion that holds a classic Chinese-style tea house. In and around the garden, you will find a market selling traditional Chinese handicrafts and snacks.

Across the River is home to many of Shanghai's most impressive buildings, and as a part of the Pudong New Business district is home to some of the finest hotels and restaurants in Shanghai.

Nanshi (OldTown) south of the Bund is a lively, earthy place whose crowded, narrow streets bring old Shanghai instantly to mind. Nearby, the walled YuyangGarden, is an ancient park of rock formations, pavilions, towers, and man-made lotus ponds designed by a Ming dynasty family.

From the airport

International flights to Shanghai arrive at the new Pudong International Airport, 45kms east of the city. A taxi from the airport to the Bund will take up to one hour and cost around US$20, while a shuttle bus is US$2.50. A magnetic levitation train is also available to whisk passengers into the city in 20 minutes. Most domestic flights arrive at the old Hongqiao Airport, 15kms west of the city. From here a taxi is US$5 and a public bus costs as little as US$1.
